Course programme

Curriculum

The research Master's programme in Classics and Ancient Civilizations trains you to become an excellent researcher in the field of Ancient Studies. Focussing on the period from 1600 BC to 500 AD, you will analyse the languages, (material) cultures and history of the Mediterranean region, Western Europe and Western Asia from a variety of perspectives.

The programme offers a good mix of disciplinary and interdisciplinary teaching and research.

Disciplinary specialisation

The programme is disciplinary in that you focus on a particular discipline within Ancient Studies. The programme is not formally divided into specialisations, but you will specialise by choosing elective courses related to one of the following areas:

  • Classics
  • Archaeology
  • Ancient History
  • Languages and Cultures of the Ancient Near East

These areas of specialisation are tied to the expertise areas and ongoing research projects of the academic staff. This gives you plenty of opportunities to participate in ongoing research within the department.

Interdisciplinary context

The programme also provides you with an interdisciplinary perspective. During the core courses, you will learn how to approach a shared research theme from different disciplinary perspectives and to provide theoretical underpinning for this theme. You will also be encouraged to position your own discipline within a broader interdisciplinary context. You may even choose to give your entire programme, including your thesis, an interdisciplinary orientation.

Small-scale and personal

The programme is small-scale, which allows for intensive interactions with your fellow students and the academic staff. You will not only receive close supervision from staff during the courses and your research, but you will also receive personal guidance from a member of the academic staff who is assigned as your mentor.

Research expertise

The programme trains you to analyse research results, write project proposals, acquire research funding, and to effectively communicate your research results to an academic audience and the wider public. You will be well-prepared for conducting PhD research in the Netherlands or abroad and will be able to function successfully in a research-oriented position either in or outside academia.

The research Master’s in Classics and Ancient Civilizations, is a highly specialised programme that also gives you room to pursue your own interests and career goals.

The start date of this programme is September 1st.
