Course programme

Why Peace Studies in Rome?

One cannot emphasize enough the strength that our location gives to this program. Rome and the Mediterranean, with their historical significance and prominence in contemporary international affairs and conflicts, are central to the program. The proximity of other centers and areas relevant to contemporary global affairs in peace and conflict – the Middle East, North Africa, Eastern Europe – is an additional advantage to our location.

Furthermore, Rome is home to a diverse range of multinational political, humanitarian, religious and research institutions. The city is not only the center of Roman Catholicism: it has a vibrant religious landscape, with historically important Jewish, Protestant and Islamic communities. As such, students have the opportunity to engage with the topics that this discipline exposes them to in the classroom in their daily life in Rome

In order to complete the MA degree in Peace Studies students are required to write an MA thesis. The thesis will expand students’ knowledge on a particular subject, and will prepare them for future professional work or further research. Upon completing the MA thesis students will be able to demonstrate:

  • The writing skills necessary for producing a high-quality academic paper
  • The ability to practically apply the research methods and knowledge they acquired during their course work
  • The ability to conduct a research project in Peace Studies: Religions in Times of Conflict, at the graduate level

Successful completion of the MA thesis contributes 6 credits to the overall degree.

Work on the MA thesis consists of preparations for the thesis, which includes intensive consultations with the thesis advisor, research work, and thesis writing, all of which draw upon the technical skills cultivated by a humanities Master’s degree. Upon successful submission of the MA thesis, students are required to defend the thesis in form of an oral examination. Students are examined by a committee of three professors, thesis advisor, and two other reviewers with an expertise in the field related to the thesis topic. If possible, the examination committee should have one external member.

The MA thesis may be related to the practical work, and based on experiences, knowledge and data collected by the student during their internship..
