About this course

During the Human Movement Sciences you gain a fundamental understanding of how we move.

You will learn to translate multidisciplinary scientific knowledge to applications in sports and healthcare practice in which you combine physiology, psychology, mathematics and (bio)mechanics.

With this Master’s degree you will have various career opportunities, for instance in applied research at a rehabilitation center or sports institution, or in vocational education in sports or healthcare. As embedded scientists, exercise physiologists, or knowledge brokers our alumni share scientific knowledge with professionals in the applied fields. In addition, they contribute to the current developments in movement-related technological industry.

The degree qualifies you as a scientist with career opportunities in applied research or in vocational education.
But also as embedded scientist or exercise physiologist.

In addition to the tracks, the Master’s programme offers a limited number of students (15-20 each year) the opportunity to acquire an accreditation for Teaching in Higher Education. This additional programme is taught in Dutch and amounts to 30 credits that can be partially incorporated into the regular Master’s programme.

Course programme

Curriculum

Human movement is a key issue for today’s society. It’s the basis of everything we do. We need to move to survive, to achieve and to enjoy life. Freedom of movement in all its aspects determines quality of life – from cell to organ and from organ to the entire body.

But movement cannot always be taken for granted, as is the case with patients whose functional movement is limited due to diseases and/or conditions such as osteoarthritis, cerebral palsy, stroke or a trauma. But also among healthy individuals (especially children, the elderly, athletes and working people), there is often a need to optimise movement in order to maintain or improve the range of movements or to prevent injury.

To contribute to the quality of life or at least the fulfillment of a meaningful life will be your primary focus in this one-year Master’s programme.

You will approach this from a broad interdisciplinary frame of reference, combining physiology, (bio-)mechanics and psychology.

As a student you will join a select department with over 40 years of experience, that values personal attention. A natural environment for inspiring interactions with lecturers and researchers.

The start date of this programme is September 1st.

Biophysics in Sport

Summary

In this track you learn to tackle sports-related issues from a, predominantly, biophysical perspective (muscle and exercise physiology and biomechanics).

Rehabilitation

Summary

In this track you learn to apply biophysical (biomechanics/physiology) methods in the fields of health and rehabilitation.

Sport Psychology

Summary

This track covers the broad field of sport psychology, and also provides potential links to health-related issues. It provides you with an excellent background for a post-graduate course to become an accredited sport psychologist.

High Performance Coaching

Summary

This track has been developed in collaboration with the Amsterdam Institute of Sport Science, and focuses on the application of scientific (biophysical and sport psychological) knowledge in the field of sport coaching. For this reason, you will conduct your research project in collaboration with a sport coach.

For the track High Performance Coaching only a maximum of 20 students can be admitted per year. Selection will be based on letter of motivation; for procedure see Admissions.
