If you want to further your studies in Mathematics this programme is just for you!
Emagister presents you the M.Sc. in Mathematics endorsed by VU Amsterdam.
Did you know that modern cryptography uses prime numbers, or that bacterial growth is governed by differential equations? Or that the spread of forest fires and infections can be predicted by stochastic models? How about the discovery of gravitational waves, which confirms Einstein’s prediction that space time, is described by Riemannian geometry?
If you join the Mathematics programme, you can learn about both the fundamental aspects of mathematics and its applications. At Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam we develop fundamental mathematical theory in algebra, geometry, number theory, analysis, dynamical systems, probability, statistics and operations research. But we also apply this theory in areas as business analytics, data science, forensic statistics, systems biology, neuroscience, complex systems and many more.

About this course

Your Mathematics degree can take you in many different directions
Your analytical mind and problem-solving skills will make you a valuable asset for all kinds of employers. In turn, you’ll enjoy job flexibility, freedom, autonomy and the satisfaction of contributing to tomorrow’s society.

Professional mathematicians work in research, education, business, finance, technology, data science, healthcare and many other sectors, in positions as modellers or analysts, for instance.

If passing on your knowledge to the next generation is something that inspires you, then the Education track will give you a science teacher degree. Science education is the foundation of innovations that improve our world. Due to the shortage of certified science teachers and the fact that our economy is knowledge-based, your skills will be highly valued both inside and outside the classroom. A science teaching degree gives you the chance to get involved in improving science education – either as a teacher or in another role in the educational sector. Practical and scientific knowledge of teaching methods and educational psychology can steer your career in many directions.

Start working
Alumni from the programme have landed jobs at consultancies, banks, academic institutions, research & development companies, insurance firms, the Dutch Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek (CBS) and data-science companies like Google, Yahoo or Booking.com. Whatever you choose, we can guarantee it won't take you long to find a job.

Start a PhD research project
An academic career is open to you in several research areas, because mathematics is the language of science. If you graduate with excellent grades, you’re encouraged to apply for one of our PhD positions. The first year will be mainly spent complementing your theoretical knowledge and preparing the ground for your research. After that, you’ll develop and carry out your own research project and write your PhD thesis.

Choosing to study at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam means you can focus on either pure or applied mathematics. You’ll have a wide variety of courses to choose from because the university’s research and teaching covers both sides of the equation. You’ll benefit from excellent opportunities to deepen your mathematical knowledge and skills, and to specialise in an area of particular interest by choosing one of the tracks.

Course programme

Curriculum

A unique combination of pure and applied mathematics

This two year programme is divided into core courses, elective courses and seminars, and concludes with the Master’s project.

You’ll have the opportunity to specialise either in Pure or in Applied Mathematics, or to opt for the Educational specialisation to get your science teacher degree. Each specialisation has suggested tracks. Can’t decide? Don’t worry – you can switch tracks later on, and you’ll have plenty of freedom to choose your own study path.

In the specialisation Pure Mathematics you focus on one of the classical sub-fields of mathematics. Within this specialisation three tracks are offered, which correspond to fields in which mathematicians at VU Amsterdam do active research:
  • Algebra, Geometry and Number Theory
  • Analysis and Dynamical Systems
  • Probability and Statistics
In the specialisation Applied Mathematics you can choose one of the following tracks:
  • Biomedical Mathematics
  • Data Science and Optimization
Both tracks contain a mixture of courses laying mathematical foundations and courses that focus on specific applications.

Last but not least you can choose the Education specialisation. You’ll come away with a teaching certification for secondary education. You’ll not only become a specialist in your field but you’ll also get to share your passion and inspire the scientists of tomorrow.

The start dates of this programme are September 1st and February 1st.

First year

Depending on which track you decide to specialise in, during year one you’ll take a number of compulsory core and elective courses based on your chosen study path. Throughout the entire first year, all students take part in the weekly 'Introduction to the Master Mathematics'. This seminar is led by active mathematicians who will introduce you to the local research groups in your field of specialisation. You will also learn about possible thesis projects, practice giving advanced mathematical presentations, and experience what it means to be part of an active research community.

During the entire Master's programme, you can choose from 50+ courses in Mastermath – a nationwide programme offered jointly by the nine Dutch universities with a Master’s programme in mathematics. Over 25% of these courses are offered at the VU campus, and the rest elsewhere. The variety of choice is endless!

Second year

In your second year, you can select electives relating to your chosen area of specialisation. You will continue choosing Mastermath courses. The last semester of your second year is dedicated to the Master’s project. This is either a research thesis under the supervision of a staff member, or an external internship at a company or research facility. If you choose an internship, you’ll have an on-location advisor as well as a supervisor from the Department of Mathematics. To complete your Master's project, you’ll write a thesis and present your results in a colloquium.
