Cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide and the incidence keeps rising due to the aging of the population.
Amsterdam UMC has identified cancer research as one of its core research areas. The Cancer Center Amsterdam (CCA) works in close collaboration with international and national centres of excellence in the area of Oncology, such as the Dutch Cancer Institute. The Master Oncology aims to transfer the unique combination of translational Oncology research to the next generation of students. You will be trained in state-of-the-art techniques in cancer research and therapy in a challenging environment by experts in the field. You will become an MSc in Oncology with in-depth knowledge, attitudes and skills in the field of cancer research. This includes the development, execution, organization and evaluation of scientific research.

About this course



After successful completion of your study, you have earned the title MSc in Oncology. The aim of our Master is to provide you with all the knowledge and skills required to become a highly competitive PhD candidate.

The programme:

is designed to equip you to become the next generation of scientists who are eager to understand the causes of cancer and develop novel diagnostic and therapeutic modalities;
offers a small scale programme providing personal attention and guidance;
is developed by passionate clinical and preclinical scientists who are active in the field of Oncology;
is unique and teaches from the perspective of translational research.



Approximately 75% off all our students will start a PhD programme soon after graduation. Of course other employers, such as pharmaceutical companies or biotech companies and policy makers are also interested in versatile students with your background.

Admission requirements
This is a selective Master's programme. You will be considered for admission to the Master's programme Oncology if you hold a Bachelor's degree from an accredited research university including at least three full years of academic study amounting to a minimum of 180 ECTS or equivalent. For a bachelor’s degree from an institute of higher education (HBO/HLO), you need 240EC (4 years of study). To be considered for admission to the Master’s programme in Oncology you must meet the requirements listed below.

The Master Oncology offers you a challenging programme!

The Master Oncology aims to train Bio-medically oriented Bachelors and related Bachelors in Life Sciences to become independent researchers with in-depth knowledge in the field of Oncology.

If so, the Master programme in Oncology was made for you!

An average of 35 talented students from the Netherlands, Europe or outside Europe are admitted to the master programme each year.

You have a high degree of freedom to choose among several specialized master courses and a number of outstanding research groups for research projects. The programme coordinator advises you during your career development and helps you to set-out a tailor-made programme of your interests. The Master Oncology is a two-year international programme of 120 ECTS and tuition is completely in English.

You can choose from a variety of optional master courses. All optional courses need to be accepted by the Examination Board. For more information about the content of courses consult the study guide.
