An Introduction to Your Modules

Final project (Core)

This is the final module of the MA Choreography programme and successful completion leads to the award of Master of Arts.

The module is designed to give students the opportunity to pursue self-initiated research and production, based on an area of their choice. The final project should demonstrate an understanding of theoretical perspectives relevant to students’ practice, contain a coherent implementation of research methodology and pre-production planning, and show evidence of original research.

The module is assessed by a negotiated submission of practice and written analysis/presentation, or a fully written dissertation.

Performance and Collaboration (Core)

This module offers the opportunity to develop and explore the working practice of the technical skills and knowledge required for advanced dance creation and performance.

Students can work intensively with a choreographer to develop an ensemble dance performance. Students are exposed to professional working practices and may be given the opportunity to take on further roles typically found within a small scale touring company.

Students can participate in weekly technique classes aimed at the continuous development of technical performance. The module works alongside ‘Artist as Researcher’ and ‘Artist as Facilitator’ to prepare students for work as a dance industry professional, which may include freelance performer, rehearsal director, or choreographer.

The Artist as Facilitator (Core)

This module encourages students to consider methods of leading and facilitating dance in different contexts. There is a strong pedagogical focus as well as opportunities to share and refine innovative methodologies for 21st Century learning.

Students will be given the opportunity to design and facilitate workshops for specific contexts, whilst engaging with a variety of practices and theories by seminal dance practitioners that have challenged traditional concepts of performance and choreography. This module runs alongside Performance and Collaboration and aims to prepare students for work as freelance practitioners and facilitators.

The Artist as Researchers (Core)

This module allows students to explore their own independent research interests. Students can develop the practical skills necessary to implement a research style for performance, production, and written material. The module directly addresses the interrelationship between theory and practice, and students are asked to consider their own interests and projects in relation to current research frameworks and methodologies.

Students can explore the journey from designing and implementing a research project, to presentation/publication. The module spreads across two terms and works alongside other modules to prepare students for work in the fields of education, research, and choreography.

The Freelance Choreography (Core)

This module focuses on students’ individual development as a choreographer and creative practitioner. Students will be introduced to a range of choreographic strategies and encouraged to locate their practice in the current contemporary dance landscape. The module promotes critical feedback between peers, and encourages an appreciation of choreography as a continuous creative process. The module culminates in a choreographic work which may be presented at a public showcase in the LPAC theatre.
