This distance learning MA offers you a chance to study important figures and ideas in recent and contemporary philosophy – all from the comfort of your own home.
You’ll be guided through the work of key philosophers in the European tradition including Kant, Nietzsche, Heidegger and Foucault. You’ll gain a broad knowledge and understanding of philosophy, learning from our experienced staff. The course is taught and assessed entirely online, giving you the freedom to study anytime, anywhere.
The Continental (or European) tradition is the most influential branch of philosophical enquiry. It provides essential knowledge for the study of social, cultural, political, media, literary or art theory.
About this course
The course provides a coherent approach to central ideas and problems in continental philosophy. It gives students already familiar with the field an opportunity to explore further, and it offers students new to continental philosophy an introduction to important figures and approaches. It serves as a good basis for postdoctoral research and also for developing ways of thinking that connect with problems and practices outside of philosophy itself.
The course is intended for anyone with an interest in continental philosophy, or who simply has a passion for the 'big questions' in life, such as those concerning the self, freedom, time, our connection with the real world, and knowledge and power.
We normally require a first degree in philosophy or a related subject, but sometimes other forms of experience are equally as valuable. You need to be comfortable working online and discussing your ideas with others.
Two things make this course stand out.
First, it is taught by experienced staff who really take time to communicate with you. There is a very friendly and inclusive atmosphere and everyone enjoys working together on exciting material.
Second, it is almost unique as a distance learning MA in continental philosophy, and in fact there are very few MAs in philosophy of any kind. What really makes this course different is that the curriculum that you follow has been designed to provide a coherent structure for your work. The modules that you take complement one another.
You will be contacted by the Course Leader of the MA.
Yes. Your tutors provide notes and videos for you each week, and take part in the online discussions. Your tutors will be in touch with you regularly, will provide detailed feedback on your written work, and discuss your progress with you. You can email your tutors at any time and arrange face to face tutorials where needed, The course is intended to be as much like a face to face course as possible, but online.

David Webb
Professor of Philosophy, Course Leader
https://www.staffs.ac.uk/people/david-webb My research is centered on recent and contemporary European philosophy, and I have a particular interest in French epistemology and philosophy of science. I am currently drawing on the work of Michel Serres to examine the relation between knowledge, ethics, and politics, with particular reference to governance at times of crisis. I am also interested in readings of Foucault’s conception of critique as a rational practice.
