The course is designed to provide learners with the opportunity to gain knowledge and skills in sign language interpreting or translation (SLT/I) within several domains to enhance employability. The qualification with develop theoretical and practical knowledge, skills and performance in interpreting and will be relevant for interpreters who work as sign language interpreters or translators and have English or British Sign Language as one of their working languages.

The course is intellectually stimulating and upon completion learners will have the skills, knowledge and understanding to apply theoretical frameworks to real world interpreting and translation situations, support co-interpreters/translators and engage in complex SLT/I work in the medical, legal and conference domains.

The course adopts an interdisciplinary approach that will enable learners to develop an understanding of complex and challenging SLT/I environments. Skills development includes professionalising working languages, updating your knowledge of new research and its application to our work and critical reflection on one’s own and others practice.

Schön (1987), in raising the question of why profesionals should undertake reflective thinking, maintains that an essential component of professional practice is one's capability to decisively reflect when face with new, intricate, and diverse situations. The creation of a reflective professional who is able, through a structured scaffolded training approach, to adapt to, cope with, and learn from new situations will be in a position to support his or her own future growth and become an autopoeitic interpreting practitioner. (Bown, 2013). The module will provide the learner with the knowledge and skills to critically reflect upon their own and other's interpreting practice and continued development as a professional practitioner. Students will have the opportunity to critically discuss the essential components of reflective professional practice, including ethical approaches within the context of professional standards. Opportunities will also be afforded to develop and utlilise transferable reflective frameworks (scaffolding strategies) which can be applied in a supportive capacity with developing practitioners and peers. The module will compare monolingual interaction and interpreter-mediated interaction so that you will be able to critically evaluate the impact of the presence of an interpreter from a Discourse Analysis lens.

We will consider interpreting provision in situ and remotely, the ethics of such provision and the coordination of teams for optimal service delivery. This module focuses in monologue and dialogue interpreting within legal settings such as solicitor meetings, police interviews, magistrates court, etc. There will also be elements of sight and immediate translations such as: wills, contracts, police witness statements, etc. The module will also include the use of relevant remote interpreting technology as used in police stations and in courts for prison link or vulnerable witnesses, etc.
