About this course

The entry requirement for this course is a Bachelor (Honours) Degree at a 2:2 or above in any discipline.  We look for applicants to have relevant work experience with demonstrable interest in Journalism in order to be eligible for the programme. We may also consider lesser qualifications if you have sufficient relevant work experience within the industry. 
If English is not your first language, it is usually required that you sit an English language test in order to gain entry onto our postgraduate programmes.

Course programme

You’ll join a global community of media professionals reflecting on your current practice and expanding the scope of your expertise. The course will build on your professional experience and directly inform and develop your daily practice with assignments that support your individual career goals. Tutors and mentors with substantial industry experience will support you in developing leadership attributes as well as the ability to apply advanced journalistic skills across a wide range of platforms, including television, radio, online, print and social media. Your learning will be underpinned by modern research into global journalism and media practice. You’ll develop the ability to analyse the industry with academic rigour and appraise political, economic, regulatory and cultural influences in different global regions. You’ll explore innovative forms of media practice and engage with a variety of approaches to developing creative leadership and entrepreneurship. This course will also strengthen transferable skills, including problem solving, planning, team work, time management, cross-cultural interaction and use of social media. Our online learning and teaching environment includes a global virtual newsroom and enables you to interact with tutors and fellow professionals. A wide range of e-books and e-journals give you access to current relevant academic research. During an on-campus residential week, you’ll be able to interact with tutors and peers in person in our industry standard cross-platform newsroom and TV studio. Edinburgh Napier University has one of the longest records for providing journalism education in the UK and has Skillset Screen and Media Academy status. This course was designed in consultation with a wide range of industry representatives and accreditation bodies. This is a one year full-time distance learning course and is split up into three trimesters. You’ll learn by a variety of teaching methods including lectures, tutorials, studio and newsroom sessions and through independent study.
