Introduction

The Master's degree in Local and Regional Economic Development (Research Training) was launched in 2003 and is recognised by the Economic and Social Research Council as the basis for funded 1+3 studentships. It provides students with the appropriate knowledge, skills and competencies required of an advanced, professionally training researcher, specialising in the field of economic development. With widespread changes occurring in our economies, not least those relating to globalization, post-industrialism, knowledge-based economies and the informational age, the contemporary period is ripe for advanced inquiry on these issues. Furthermore, the key academic themes at the heart of this scheme-inward investment, small business and community enterprise, sustainability, training and skills initiatives, and urban and rural regeneration-are increasingly relevant within both academic and policy-related spheres. The Human Geography Staff within the Institute who will be involved in delivering this degree are highly active in influencing these debates.

Semester 1

During the taught part of the MA, we provide a mixture of broadly-based and subject-specific training in research methodologies and transferable employed related skills in the broad field of economic development. This provides students with the skills necessary for the completion of a thesis within the specified time limit. It also aims to enable students to develop the skills valued by employers. Three modules are delivered through the Aberystwyth Faculty Research Training Programme, where students learn about Research Design, the Collection of Qualitative and Quantitative Data, and also Research Skills and Personal Development. In the Institute of Geography and Earth Sciences, we introduce you to debates in local and research economic development and extend your skills to design a Masters-level research topic.

Semester 2

Part Two of the MA occupies the third semester, where time is concentrated on the thesis, generally relating to issues raised in Part One.

Semester 3

Potential dissertation topics:
Students taking this course previously have explored themes such as Devolution, Constitutional Change and Economic Development.
