Course programme
The MA Media History is designed to provide students with advanced tuition in their chosen field, and research training suitable for the effective completion of advanced research projects. This MA is designed specifically for students who wish to study media issues in an historical rather than an essentially contemporary or theoretical context. Focussing primarily on British media institutions, it introduces students to some of the important themes encountered in studying media history, both theoretical and practical, explores the political, social and intellectual structures which have shaped and continue to shape both the media itself and historians’ approaches to the media, and offers a guided opportunity for students to develop their individual research interests in this relatively new field of historical enquiry. Students take a core module in semester 1 and an option module in semester 2 plus 60 credits of research training across both semesters in Part 1, and write a 20,000 word dissertation in Part 2. Students who complete Part 1 only are eligible for a Postgraduate Diploma.
Key staff: Dr Sian Nicholas, Professor Tom O’Malley (Department of Theatre, Film and Television), Dr Jamie Medhurst (Department of Theatre, Film and Television)
