Explore new aspects of the Middle Ages and learn to handle all types of source material in this fascinating course.
This course is open to graduates of any humanities or social science subject who are interested in studying the middle ages, and offers training in new disciplines and in using all types of medieval source material. It can be taken over up to five years and is the only MA in Medieval Studies which offers this level of flexibility. Students on the MA are full members of the prestigious Graduate Centre for Medieval Studies (which celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2015) and are encouraged to take part in all our research events and study trips.

Course programme

Modules include:

  • How to research the Middle Ages: this module introduces the disciplines available within the MA, and the research skills specific to each.
  • Source Analysis: this module enables students to work with an expert supervisor on a piece of evidence of their own choice. It might be one of the medieval manuscripts or coins held in the University Library, a medieval building, or a published text.
  • Option modules taught by supervisors from Archaeology, Art History, Classics, Economics, English Literature, History or Modern Languages
  • A Dissertation: usually taken as the last part of the programme and designed to build upon knowledge and expertise gained in other modules.
