The MA in Performance Industries: Professional Development, will allow you to hone your skills in contemporary art practices. It is designed to help you develop your professional skills, alongside expanding your knowledge of the arts sector. With a focus on creative leadership, the course will allow you to explore contemporary issues and practices in a constantly evolving industry, whilst enhancing your employability through developing a diverse range of skills which, enable you to work in a variety of contexts.

The course allows you to develop your own area of professional practice: it is ideally suited to professionals who already work in the arts sector, or related fields, who wish to further develop their skills to keep pace with a rapidly-evolving industry. For graduates in the early stages of their career, the course will help you achieve your future goals whilst engaging with this dynamic industry.

The Performance Hub allows students to work collaboratively in an industry-standard facility and our regional networks also allow access to key employers working in the arts industry. Our Black Box Theatre is perfect for professional, public performances and our range of facilities allow you to work in an environment which replicates industry standards, equipping you with the skills to understand contemporary trends, collaborative practices and working in the arts sector.

The aim of the MA in Performance Industries: Professional Development is to equip you with the skills required in both arts management and the contextual understanding of how the arts create meaning socially, culturally, and politically.

Through this expansive programme, you will be able to develop a broad range of skills that will be attractive to employers, helping you develop as a freelance artist and increasing awareness of the opportunities available in the cultural and creative sector. This module will investigate the elements of digital policy within the industry and will allow you to experiment and be creative around the idea of the digital dissemination of work and the logistics of creating digital events.

This module is the culmination of your postgraduate study and allows you to demonstrate the depth of your knowledge and understanding gained through your course. In this module you will be required to undertake an extended independent project negotiated with your nominated supervisor. You will produce either a piece of empirical research, professionally related practice or performance related practice depending on your area of study.


As a graduate of this course you will be able to:

  1. demonstrate a persuasive knowledge and understanding of internal and external organisational contexts with an emphasis on responding to and shaping the dynamic and changing nature of the performing arts industry
  2. experiment with and apply skills and collaborative practices essential to the management of business and arts organisations such as commercial acumen, analytical thinking, critical thinking, decision making, and the ability to innovate
  3. apply and evaluate theoretical frameworks in relation to business and management within the arts sector, with a critical understanding of how knowledge and skills may be used effectively within an organisational context
  4. demonstrate the ability to think critically and creatively across a range of areas and contexts within the performing arts industry, undertaking a process of analysis, evaluation, and synthesising of information into an appropriate form of communication
  5. illustrate qualities and transferable skills useful for employment within the creative industries such as critical self-awareness and reflection; and the ability to continue to learn through reflection on practice, theory and experience

These fees relate to new entrants only for the academic year indicated for entry onto the course, any subsequent years study may be subject to an annual increase, usually in line with inflation.


You will need a good degree (2:2 or above) in a subject related to the creative or performance industries (e.g. performing arts, music, dance, drama). Applicants may also be considered following a successful portfolio submission and interview.

Applicants from overseas should also have a good standard of written and spoken English (normally IELTS 6.5 or equivalent).

All students will be interviewed to assess their suitability and preparedness for the course. Candidates will be considered with a significant a significant track record of professional experience in a relevant field, but without a BA (Hons) degree. To do this, non-standard applicants in this category will be interviewed, and may be asked to produce a piece of written work as a means of assessing their suitability.


Postgraduate Loan (Home Fee Status):

You may be able to get a postgraduate student loan from Student Finance England of up to £11,750 to help pay for a Master’s degree. Applications are made through Student Finance England and more information on the regulations and eligibility criteria can be found at Masters Loans gov.uk.

The University offers a generous 20% Loyalty Discount to students progressing from an undergraduate programme to a taught postgraduate programme, where both courses are University of Wolverhampton Awards.

There is no time limit on how long ago you completed your degree as long as this is your first Masters level qualification.

Self-funded:

Sponsored - Your employer, embassy or organisation can pay for your Tuition fees:

Your employer, embassy or organisation agrees to pay all or part of your tuition fees; the University will refer to them as your sponsor and will invoice them for the appropriate amount.

We must receive notification of sponsorship in writing as soon as possible, and before enrolment, confirming that the sponsor will pay your tuition fees.


Financial Hardship:

Students can apply to the Dennis Turner Opportunity Fund for help with course related costs however this cannot be used for fees or to cover general living costs.

Most charities and trust funds offer limited bursaries targeted to specific groups of students so you will need to research whether any of them are relevant to your situation.
