PSCH 423. Characteristics of Early Adolescence. 3 hours.

Physiological, social, emotional and cognitive development of early adolescence. The relationship between these developmental characteristics and success in the middle grades. Research, theory, educational practices, and federal/state policies that promote the social, emotional, and academic competence of students who are in preschool, middle school, or high school. Examines the extent, causes, and consequences of sexual assault, intimate partner violence (e.g., domestic violence, dating violence), and sexual harassment, and considers the impact of culture and community on violence and its victims.
