This two-year part-time course is delivered fully online via the University of Wolverhampton’s virtual learning environment Canvas. Students will complete six taught modules and a small-scale independent research project. The course is designed for graduates who have little or no English language teaching experience. For this reason, six hours of assessed teaching practice with real English language learners is included.

About this course

You will gain an understanding of the English language system and develop teaching skills and course and materials design skills. You will also apply your understanding of the English language system and your teaching, course and materials design skills in more specialised areas of TESOL, including English for Professional and Academic Purposes. The use of digital technologies in English language teaching and learning will also be explored.

English Language Course and Materials Design will introduce you to different approaches to designing a course. You will use language proficiency frameworks, coursebook content and needs analysis to design an English language course at curriculum, syllabus and scheme of work level. You will also become familiar with commonly used principles of English language teaching, learning and assessment materials design, including differentiation, and will produce a small sample of your own course materials. You will learn how to evaluate the design of English language courses and teaching, learning and assessment materials.

Language Awareness for English Language Teaching provides you with a comprehensive understanding of the main components of the English language system: vocabulary, grammar, lexical grammar and phonology. You will analyse and evaluate how these components are used at discourse/text level in natural spoken and written English. You will also develop an in-depth knowledge of how learners of English process natural spoken and written English texts when listening, speaking, reading and writing.

Theory and Practice of English Language Teaching introduces you to the main teaching approaches and methods used by English language teaching practitioners. You will plan lessons and learning and assessment activities, deliver micro-teaching sessions to your peers and evaluate your own teaching performance and that of your peers. The module also includes an examination of the roles of the teacher and the learner, factors that affect second language learning, classroom interaction and classroom management.

Digital Technologies in English Language Teaching introduces you to the nature and role of digital technologies for language analysis, teaching, learning and assessment. You will examine approaches and methods for teaching and assessing English as a second language online and evaluate online platforms and tools. You will also experience teaching English as a second language online in asynchronous and synchronous modes. Autonomous and collaborative learning and the ethical and legal issues related to the use of digital technologies in English as a second language teaching, learning and assessment will also be examined.

The Dissertation Module lasts six months and gives you the opportunity to undertake an extended piece of independent research in greater depth than is possible within the scope of a taught module. You will conduct research on a topic of interest to you within the field of TESOL. You will learn primarily through research and independent study, accompanied by regular group and individual online meetings with supervisors. In the early meetings with your supervisor the focus and scope of your project, your research questions, approach and data collection and analysis methods will be agreed. Later meetings with your supervisor will require you to have drafted sections of your dissertation. You will receive detailed group and individual guidance and feedback at all stages of the dissertation module.

Specialisms in English language teaching will introduce you to specialised areas of the English language teaching profession, including Business and Professional English, Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL), English as an Additional Language (EAL), English for Academic Purposes and examining and marking international English language exams. You will also examine genre analysis, Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and professional development methods and planning for the English language teaching sector.

TESOL Research Skills prepares you for conducting your own research in the field of TESOL. You will learn how to develop appropriate research questions and hypotheses and select a suitable research approach. You will also explore the concepts of research ethics and research contribution. You will evaluate a variety of qualitative and quantitative data collection and data analysis methods and examine the reporting of research findings in the form of a literature review and a discussion of results. You will also design your own dissertation research project.

The course will be delivered online via the University's virtual learning environment Canvas.

You will be guided and supported throughout the course by your tutors who will communicate with you in regular individual and group tutorials via Canvas.

You will gain a thorough understanding of English language teaching and learning which students can then apply in a variety of contexts.


The course will allow you to develop knowledge and practical, transferrable skills, enabling you to meet the most recent and relevant demands of the field of TESOL.

These fees relate to new entrants only for the academic year indicated for entry onto the course, any subsequent years study may be subject to an annual increase, usually in line with inflation.


Students wishing to study on this course must have either:

    A 2ii, or equivalent, in a related discipline (e.g. English Language / Linguistics / Education)
or
    A 2i, or equivalent, in another discipline

Other Requirements: No teaching experience is required.

International students, and students whose first language is not English, would need to have an overall IELTS score of 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in any of the four elements (listening, speaking, reading, writing).

Postgraduate Loan (Home Fee Status):

You may be able to get a postgraduate student loan from Student Finance England of up to £11,750 to help pay for a Master’s degree. Applications are made through Student Finance England and more information on the regulations and eligibility criteria can be found at Masters Loans gov.uk.

Your employer, embassy or organisation agrees to pay all or part of your tuition fees; the University will refer to them as your sponsor and will invoice them for the appropriate amount.

We must receive notification of sponsorship in writing as soon as possible, and before enrolment, confirming that the sponsor will pay your tuition fees.


Financial Hardship:

Students can apply to the Dennis Turner Opportunity Fund for help with course related costs however this cannot be used for fees or to cover general living costs.
