The make-up artist is a professional figure who carries out his activity in the field of cinema, theater or television. Its main task is to operate, with different purposes and using various types of cosmetics, make-up interventions on the faces of the actors or characters who appear on the screen or on the stage for various reasons. The make-up artist carries out his work with different criteria according to the field of activity in which he is engaged. In television, he intervenes on the face of each character who must be filmed in the foreground and the main task is to make the subject appear without the characteristic clarity of the skin, due to the normal activity of sweating; then implement a make-up appropriate to the features of the subject and aimed at hiding any imperfections. The same happens in the field of cinema. In the theatrical field and in particular the opera, the approach to make-up is different: the make-up artist has to mark very decisively the somatic features of the represented character, for example the wrinkles of an elderly subject are outlined with very dark lines and seen by near the make-up is often grotesque. This intervention is made necessary by the distance of the spectators from the stage, (which in the case of the opera is remarkable, given the presence of the orchestra between the two) and the consequent difficulty in seeing the features of the actors. The distance softens the heaviness of the make-up resulting in the viewer's easy understanding of the character's characteristics. To these usual skills are added those of application of stage make-up, that is a make-up aimed at altering, at times even substantial, the actor's somatic features, implemented with the collaboration of the director and in close relationship with the script requirements. Aging, wounds, scars, false beards and mustaches, deformations of the facial features, are the most common interventions to carry out the make-up artist is called.
