Course programme

Managers today require a broad range of skills and capabilities, and the ability to operate effectively in a rapidly changing and increasingly global business environment.

In the first two years, the course offers a foundation in the disciplines of business, as well as exploring the functional areas of finance, human resource management and marketing.

It also introduces you to management theory, organisational issues and the importance of cultural awareness in today's business world. It further develops the interpersonal and business skills necessary for a management career.

The course includes a compulsory 12-month work placement between the second and final years. This gives you the essential work experience which will underpin your academic studies in the final year and heighten your business awareness and employability.

We have well established links with industry and regularly have placement opportunities with blue chip companies, mostly in London and south-east England, but also further afield and in other countries. The work placement may be combined with one semester of study abroad at a partner university.

The final year offers a significant managerial focus, where you develop your critical understanding of management theories, organisational behaviour, and strategic management.

There is an emphasis on the use of case studies and business simulations, many of which will be of an international nature.

Work placement

A work placement is a compulsory aspect of this degree; students are required to spend twelve months either in work or six months in work and six months studying abroad. During this time you will be employed by a company and will subsequently be paid; for students on placement in 2008/2009 salaries in excess of £14,000. In recent years students have been employed by:

  • Enterprise Rent A Car
  • Vauxhall
  • Debenhams

Careers

This programme is designed for those seeking careers in management in large organisations and multinational companies, and will be particularly of interest to those considering entry to one of the graduate training schemes offered by such organisations.

Teaching methods

Alongside traditional teaching methods of lectures, seminars and tutorials, we operate a web-based student support system called StudyNet where you can expect to find a range of material and communications about every module.

The teaching method for most modules on the course is a one hour lecture followed by a one hour seminar. Typically, a new topic will be introduced in each lecture.

The seminars provide an opportunity to discuss and obtain feedback on the topic introduced in the previous week's lecture.

Usually, assessment is split between coursework and examination. Coursework may take a variety of forms and could be individual or group work.
