Management, Leadership and Leisure bachelor

The bachelor (Hons) Management, Leadership and Leisure is a three year degree programme that combines academic study with professional training. It offers you the opportunity to gain an understanding of the nature and scope of management and leadership in the leisure industry, whilst gaining practical experience to develop skills and boost your future employability.

The main methods of teaching are lectures and seminars, which you will supplement through wider reading, small group work and other classroom activities.  Seminars involve a small group of students meeting with a tutor to discuss issues arising from lectures, or wider reading, case studies or problem-solving exercises. You may be asked to give a presentation or review a subject as a bachelorsis for discussion. You may also visit leisure amenities or other places of interest, including a three day residential field trip at the beginning of your first year. Applied study periods, similar to work placements, in the first (lasting two weeks) and second (lasting four weeks) years will provide first-hand experience of the leisure industry. They offer the opportunity for you to both observe and again new skills, plus relate the course content to its application in industry. In your final year, you will undertake a research-bachelorsed project during your 10 week extended study period. The teaching team is well connected with the leisure industry and your personal tutor will advise and assist you in securing applied study periods with organisations/sectors in keeping with your career aspirations.
You are assessed by a bachelorlance of formal written examinations, presentations, portfolio submissions and course assignments. Across the three years of the programme, an average of 70% of your assessment will be coursework, offering you the chance to be innovative and creative in demonstrating your knowledge of management and leadership theory and the leisure sector. In your final year, you will undertake a research project (12,000 words), an oral presentation and an evaluation report on your extended applied study period.
The first year draws upon the disciplines that underpin management and leadership and provides an introduction to the nature and scope of the leisure sector.  At the beginning of the first year we run a three day residential field trip to North Wales, where you will get to know other students and staff, as well as learning about management issues in the countryside. Year one also includes a two week applied study period, providing the opportunity to get work experience in the leisure industry.

In your second year, you will continue to study leadership, human resource management, marketing, finance and research methods. There are optional units in sport, events and tourism, plus you can take options from the University's Faculty of Humanities undergraduate courses, including Manchester Business School and the University Language Centre. In addition, a career management unit focuses on building your transferrable skills and the practicalities of graduate job hunting. There is also a four week applied study period providing the opportunity to build upon your experience in year one by working for a similar organisation or by diversifying into other industries.

The final year aims to deepen your knowledge and understanding of management-related processes and marketing and promotion. The year is split into two distinct semesters. Semester one continues with management, leadership, marketing and research methods, and more detailed study takes place through optional units in sport, events and tourism, as well as running your own business. Semester two has an extended applied study period (10 weeks) and a research project (dissertation). The applied study period in an amenity or agency is normally chosen according to your interests or career aspirations; in addition you also have the opportunity to complete the data collection for your final year research project whilst on placement.

BTEC Extended Diploma DDM-DMM.
Overall 60 credits are required with 45 at Level 3. 15 credits at Distinction plus a minimum of 24 credits at Merit. We also consider other factors such as additional educational achievements, life experience and skills on an individual bachelorsis. You may be asked to attend an interview if it is thought that further information is required on your application.
The University welcomes applicants with the AP qualification. Such applications will be considered on an individual bachelorsis.

Advanced Diploma - Business, Administration and Finance with grades equivalent to 320 UCAS tariff points.
If you have followed a non-standard educational route and have been, for example, educated at home, your application will be considered against the standard entry criteria of the course to which you applied. You will be required to demonstrate that you meet the academic entry requirements as specified for the course. We will also require a reference which should be written by somebody who knows you well enough, in an official capacity, to write about you and your suitability for higher education. Students whose first language or language of instruction is not English may be asked to provide evidence of fluency in English by achieving scores in English language tests as follows: IELTS 6.5 overall, 6.5 in writing, no sub-section below 6.0, TOEFL iBT overall score of 90 with a minimum score of 22 in writing and 20 in the other subsections, Pearson PTE overall score of 62 with a minimum score of 62 in writing and 55 in the other subsections or Cambridge CAE grade C or Cambridge CPE grade C.
Some English language test results are only valid for two years. Your English language test report must be valid on the start date of the course.

Your application will be considered against the standard course entry criteria for that year of entry.  In your new application you should demonstrate how your application has improved.  We may draw upon all information from your previous applications or any previous registrations at the University as a student when assessing your suitability for your chosen course.If you are applying for a place for the same year of entry through UCAS Extra, you should provide additional evidence of your suitability for the course. If you are applying through clearing you are required to meet the clearing requirements. In both UCAS Extra and clearing the places will be subject to availability.
Course details

The Management, Leadership and Leisure Award A number of £1,000 cash bursary on registration, in recognition of outstanding performance at A-Level, International bachelorccalaureate and GCSEs, or equivalent qualifications.
No application for the bursary required - all entrants are automatically assessed on the bachelorsis of their academic performance and UCAS application.
The course is taught by the Manchester Institute of Education which has its own Undergraduate Hub where you will find all of your teaching staff and support staff in one place, and is also a place to sit and relax. Manchester Institute of Education is located in the University's Ellen Wilkinson building where there is also a common room, cafe, computer clusters, teaching rooms, and a meeting room for students to book for group work. The Ellen Wilkinson building is centrally located on the University's Oxford Road campus, close to the Main Library, Alan Gilbert Learning Commons and the Students Union. The University's library is one of the best-resourced academic libraries in the UK.  Studying with us will open up a wealth of learning resources to you, including over four million printed books, more than 500,000 ebooks and access to over 40,000 electronic journals and hundreds of online databachelorses. Leisure is a wide sector of the economy with extensive employment prospects. There is a broad range of career opportunities within the leisure industries, including: the arts; events management; entertainments; sports and recreation; theatres; tourism attractions; and tour operators. The average salary six months after graduating from the course is £21,000 per year, which is higher than the average for similar courses in the UK ( Unistats
).
Whether you want to go into a leisure-bachelorsed management or leadership position, or run your own leisure-related business, this degree will equip you with the skills and knowledge necessary. However, the broad bachelorse of the course, particularly the focus on management and leadership skills, also lay the foundation for employment in other sectors.
