Management practice in the public sector is undergoing profound changes. Public institutions are under pressure to cut costs, improve service, respond to citizens and emulate the private sector, all of which can conflict.

Reforms in the public sector are influenced by current management theory and research. These programmes analyse problems of management in the public sector. Interdisciplinary in nature, each programme includes teaching from two Birkbeck academic departments, focusing on management, and politics and social policy respectively.
