Executive Diploma Management Studies (DMS)

Course Overview
To provide managers with a wide range of knowledge and skills to enable them to become effective members of a management team and to ensure that managers possess an up-to-date awareness of management and leadership techniques.

The course encourages the self development of managers so they can achieve their maximum potential. It also allows managers to advance their qualifications to MBA level.

The DMS programme provides a variety of learning situations to meet the complex and varying needs of managers. By the use of workshops, the programme mixes a more traditional teaching approach with a student-centred approach that develops the skills and attitudes required by managers today.

What will I study?
The Executive Diploma in Management Studies (EDMS) is one of the largest and most widely acknowledged management education schemes currently in operation throughout the UK. It has a proven track record, both as a recognised management qualification giving confidence and skills to the individual and for value-for-money to the employer. Most of your teaching will be in the form of lectures, seminars and workshops; student interaction features strongly - the more you put it the more you will get out. You will be treated as individuals, are encouraged to develop and share existing strengths, explore new skills and discover personal potential.

The emphasis in Year 1 is on the role of the middle manager and is, therefore, concerned with the operational aspects of the above topics. Priority is given to personal competence and interaction with individuals who are in immediate organisational relationships to them.

Year 2 builds on Year 1 using the basic skills and personal development achieved in the first year as a foundation for a broader analysis of the topic areas. Although personal attributes are still a major focus of Year 2, a broader organisational perspective is developed where environmental factors have a greater significance. Year 2 emphasises the theoretical underpinnings of the topic areas whilst developing the skills required at middle/senior management level.

In both years the topics, where appropriate, are delivered on a team teaching basis. In addition there will be a residential period in both years and a management report during the second year.

Lectures are delivered to the whole group. Seminars and workshops operate with small groups of students. Each lecture is followed by a seminar on the same topic. In the seminar discussions, case studies etc are used to explore and integrate the theoretical substance of the lecture.
