Course programme

Course description

Our flexible Management degrees share a common first year before allowing you to focus on your chosen specialism to enhance your career prospects. With over 90 course units to choose from, you really can shape your own degree.

Sustainable and Ethical Business is about new ways of thinking on modern business and society, and be particularly attractive for those wishing to make careers in (corporate) social responsibility or the third sector of NGOs and charities.

Since the Management and Management (Specialism) degrees are identical in the first year, transfer between them is straightforward,  so you should apply for only one of them.

Aims

This course aims to promote critical awareness of the merits and complexities of management and to instill an appreciation of the association between theory and practice. It aims to introduce you to important new developments in the field of management and to enable you to develop appropriate practical and transferable skills.

Special features

  • Study a broad-based management degree whilst specialising in sustainable and ethical business
  • Your chosen specialism will be reflected in your final degree title - BSc (Hons) Management (Sustainable and Ethical Business)
  • Don't want to specialise? Graduate with BSc (Hons) Management

Teaching and learning

You will normally study four or five course units per semester. Each week there are usually two hours of lectures for each course unit and a one hour workshop in alternate weeks, although this varies slightly. You are expected to double this in private study. Group work and group or individual presentations will form a regular part of your assignments.

Coursework and assessment

Essays, multiple choice tests, project reports and presentations, in-class tests and weekly assignments constitute the coursework component of assessment, although the nature and proportion of coursework varies across course units. The remainder of assessment is by unseen examination. Depending on the degree course, in your final year you can choose to do a research-based dissertation or project. We aim to strike a balance between examinations and assessed coursework as well as providing opportunities for feedback on progress through non-assessed work.

Course unit details

You take courses totalling 360 credits over the duration of your studies in order to graduate with Honours; 120 credits in each year of study. Generally, one semester courses are worth 10 credits and full year courses are worth 20 credits. As your studies progress you have increasing flexibility in choosing courses which suit your personal interests and career aspirations.

What our students say

'I particularly enjoyed Foundations and Applications of Marketing and Retail Marketing. Our lecturer came up with practical projects, exploring the retail industry while observing shoppers or comparing outlets - we observed the theory we had learned in action. She took seminar groups around the city and showed how different parts of Manchester are marketed, backing up the tour with theory.'

- Daria Savilova, Management student

'The theoretical underpinning of the course prepared me to face real-life challenges at work. Within the marketing industry, particularly its digital aspects, it is a constant education. Nobody - despite their seniority or experience - stops learning. The industry is continually progressing and it is a constant battle to stay ahead of the game.'

- Sarah-Jane Edwards graduated from BSc (Hons) Management (Marketing) in 2010 and gained a place on the prestigious Manchester Masters graduate programme
