Why choose this course? Course overview This module is for all health and social care professionals involved with the care of individuals. Study on this course will give you the foundation to support further learning and enhance your professional development. It will enable you to demonstrate your knowledge, understanding and application of learning skills and key transferable skills and encourage you to reflect on and critically appraise your learning journey and understand the implications of learning for practice. The aim of this module is to develop your knowledge, understanding and skills in the management of risks and their root causes. You will explore the impact of safety culture and human behaviours on reducing harm to patients. This module will develop your ability to analyse critical and serious untoward incidents (SUIs) in the workplace by identifying their root causes, using a systems approach. It will improve your capacity to make management decisions regarding staff and patients involved in SUIs and critical incidents and develop your ability to diagnose the root cause of errors and develop strategies to reduce the level of harm and the likelihood of errors re- occurring. There will be participative approach to learning and encouraging personal reflection, and drawing on your experiences of errors, near misses or SUIs. Learning and teaching will involve a mixture of methods including lecture, individual and group exercises and discussion, self directed study, DVD triggers, case studies, experiential learning and activity-based learning. Risk management: General principles of risk management and governance, risk identification, probability of harm, reporting systems and risk assessment; Theory of the systems approach to root cause analysis.
