Course programme

Course Objectives:

The aim of the first day of this three day course is to ensure that delegates can undertake manual handling assessments

During the first day the main objectives are to:

  • provide an understanding of the legislative and risk assessment requirements for manual handling
  • demonstrate how the spine works, how to avoid damage to the spine, the effects of damage to the spine and work related upper limb disorders

The aim of the second and third day is to ensure that delegates can go back to their organizations and confidently deliver a half day manual handling course including refresher training.

The second day will include a session with a physiotherapist and the second and third days will be taught by a highly experienced training coach.

NB Delegates can attend day one only if they wish

Contents:

  • Manual Handling Legislation
  • Undertaking a Manual Handling Risk Assessment
  • How the spine works
  • Exercise and how to prevent damage
  • Back injury causes and effects
  • WRULDs (Work Related Upper Limb Disorders)
  • How people learn and how to make your training effective
  • Practical training and lesson planning exercises.

Tutor:

Fiona Rogers is has been delivering a wide range of training for over 20 years. Initially practical, vocational training skills and through natural progression developing and delivering courses in-house as part of her role in Human Resources Management within a plc. Her remit expanded to include Health and Safety and she moved into Health and Safety training. More recently she has worked as a Health and Safety and Personal Development trainer. Her experience covers a wide range of industries and the public; private and voluntary sector.

Course Aims:

To ensure that organizations can meet their requirements with respect to manual handling assessments and training (including HSE recommended refresher training)

To provide delegates with the skills to conduct manual handling assessments and to instruct others in appropriate manual handling techniques. NB This course includes a pack of training materials for the delegate to use when instructing within their organization

To have a friendly and relaxed atmosphere where delegates can learn about manual handling and how to instruct

Participants:

Staff responsible for manual handling assessment, training and monitoring of any kind. This includes those conducting inductions, supervising staff who are responsible for operations involving manual handling and those who instruct in safe lifting techniques.

This training is appropriate to all industries where there regular manual movement of loads including lifting, putting down, pushing, pulling, carrying, moving or supporting. This may include delegates from heavy industry, transport, logistics, chemical industry, food manufacturing, hotel management, retail, etc.
