This course is designed to help companies' fulfil their legal obligation to provide training for employees involved in manual handling operations. The course is also designed to inform employees of the requirements of the manual handling Regulations and to make them aware of the personal risks of incorrect manual handling. Delegates will be taught the necessary skills of how to manage loads safely and effectively.

Back pain is now the most frequent medical cause of absence from work. More than a third of all over-three-day injuries reported to HSE and local authorities are associated with manual handling.
The course comprises both theoretical and practical training to develop competence in the following areas:

- National Statistics (Types of injury, Sites of injury)
- Manual Handling and the Law (Employers & Employees Duty)
- The Structure & Functions of the Spine (The inter-vertebral disc, Slipped/Prolapsed disc)
- Top Heavy Bending (Good handling technique, Lifting a load)
- Correct Lifting Techniques (Base movement described & practiced)
- Dual Team Lifting (Advantages & Disadvantages, Considerations)
- Pulling & Pushing (The technique)
- Awkward Loads
- Mechanical Aids
- Personal Protective Equipment

Assessment
- All delegates are assessed as to their competency by continued assessment throughout the course.
