Course programme

The City and Guilds Level 2 Diploma in Engineering is a programme of study that is mainly practical based with a high level of workshop time. The classroom activity is directly related and supported by the practical classes.

The 3 mandatory units are;

  • Working in Engineering- This unit covers the need to recognise and use safe working practices, consideration of the environment and working effectively as part of a team. It includes the methods of communication that engineers use every day in particular engineering drawing.
  • Principles of Engineering Technology - This unit covers the mathematics and science that is used in practical engineering calculations and also material science in terms of selection of types, common forms of supply, properties and methods of changing their properties.
  • Principles of Manufacturing Technology - This units is concerned with the methods of manufacture. It includes the range of functions found in manufacturing organisations and will provide the candidate with the knowledge to place the manufacturing production of routine engineering components by the most economic manufacturing methods.

Optional units are;

  • Machine Components Using Milling Techniques- This unit is concerned with thee underlying process in setting special holding devices prior to carrying out milling operations. the Candidate will be able to set and operate milling machines. They will be able to select the appropriate automatic feed and cutters to achieve the desired outcome. The candidate will be able to select and set cutters for straddle milling.
  • Machine Components Using Turning Techniques - This unit covers a broad range of turning activities that are required in the engineering and manufacturing sectors. It covers skills and knowledge needed to produce turned components in different materials, using appropriate tools and equipment. Inspection techniques to achieve the required tolerances and confirming to specifications whilst complying with health and safety legislation and regulations.
  • Using Bench Fitting Techniques - This units covers a broad range of fitting activities that are required in the engineering and manufacturing sectors. It covers skills and knowledge needed to produce components for assembly using appropriate tools, different materials and inspection techniques to achieve the required tolerances and conforming to specifications whilst complying with health and safety legislations and regulations.
  • Welding by MIG process - This unit covers the practical and technical aspects of producing welded joints in different positions and configurations using the Metal Arc Gas Shielded Welding process.
  • Welding by TIG process - This unit covers the practical and technical aspects of producing welded joints in different positions and configurations using the Tungsten Arc Gas Shielded Welding process.

Every learner at Central Sussex College who is under 19 will undertake a personal Study Programme designed to develop them academically, practically and personally. Study Programmes contain 3 essential elements:

  • Subject Course – Vocational or chosen Academic subject, usually studied for 12 – 16 hours a week.
  • English and Maths – Every learner will work towards Level 2 English and Maths (C grade equivalent). Learners who have achieved a Grade C will extend their English and Maths.
  • 3E – Our own brand of specific entrepreneurship, enterprise and employability training.

You will have specific time in your timetable for each of the three elements above and you will be expected to attend all elements throughout the year. Study programmes are designed to help you meet your maximum potential and progress to the next level of study of into work.
