Designed to demystify oral surgery and develop your surgical abilities in areas such as bone and soft tissue surgery, this programme will equip you with the skills and knowledge required to perform surgical procedures competently.The programme aims to develop your knowledge and competencies in the diagnosis and management of oral and facial pathologies, simple and advanced surgical exodontia, soft tissue surgery, excision of lesions, bone grafting and endodontic surgery.Throughout this highly engaging and demanding course you will receive education in the surgical and non-surgical treatment of medically compromised patients. It places particular emphasis on contemporary practice, evidence-based principles and systems to ensure an optimal outcome for the patient and practitioner. In this programme you will learn to provide treatment to your own patients, from initial consultation and assessment, to surgery and management of post-operative complications. You will also have the opportunity to develop sound judgment based on evidence and management of patient cases using a multidisciplinary approach from discussion with colleagues from other programmes.The Master's in Clinical Dentistry (MClinDent) Oral Surgery degree is awarded by BPP University.

Course programme

Basic surgical sciences (20 credits)

Students will be introduced to general surgical principles and will be taught the pragmatic approach to solve common clinical problems of oral surgery patient. Students will be equipped with the knowledge of surgical protocols and decision making in oral surgery.

Principles of oral medicine and oral pathology (20 credits)

Students will be introduced to the fundamental principles of oral medicine, history taking, clinical examination, and the investigations required to diagnose oral medicine cases. Students will also be introduced to the management of oral medicine patients using prescribing and therapeutically approach as well as operative intervention.

Principles of dento-alveolar surgical dentistry (20 credits)

Students will be introduced to the fundamental principles, theory and safe practice of dento-alveolar surgery, and common medical problems in dentistry. Students will also be equipped with the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to manage a dento-alveolar surgery patient and complications of treatment.

Fundamentals of bone augmentation and grafting (15 credits)

This module introduces the various techniques and materials used in bone augmentation including techniques of harvesting autogenous bone grafts and sinus elevation. The module also covers the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the severely resorbed jaws, where loss of alveolar bone height and buccolabial bone width combine with reduction in bone density, severely compromise direct implant treatment.

Advanced surgical protocols (15 credits)

This module covers the surgical protocols involved in this specialist subject, including relevant techniques and related instrumentation. Students practice various surgical protocols on models and have the opportunity to observe clinical practice. Students, dependent on their level of competency, may apply the skills learnt on actual patients.

Advanced clinical practice (30 credits)

Students present and treat a minimum of ten surgical cases, four of which are under supervision and appraised at an regional clinic. Students also contribute to seminars and present interesting case reports they treated or intend to treat under supervision or independently. The cases build up a clinical portfolio that is marked for evidence of successful completion of the module.

Evidence based dentistry: understanding research (20 credits)

This module introduces medical statistics and statistical analysis, methodologies of research design and debate, exploring their specific application in dental research and evaluation of different treatment modalities.

Evidence based dentistry: professional project (40 credits)

Students will be able to develop a research question and produce a research dissertation on an area relevant to their practice.
