History

The 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami claimed 200,000 lives and left millions homeless.
The scale of the disaster and the challenges faced in dealing with the crisis led to a worldwide outcry for improved logistics in humanitarian relief operations.

MASHLM was born in response to this need and it is the only major international program currently offering an advanced master's degree in Humanitarian Logistics and Management.

The program supports the global humanitarian community by providing key training which helps practitioners and organizations improve their performance in humanitarian operations.

Areas of specialisation

MASHLM course work is designed to meet the real world needs of today's humanitarian actors by providing a balanced mix of academic and practical teaching. Course work is applied, with traditional lectures complemented by games, workshops, simulations, and case studies. A major emphasis is placed on interaction. Faculty members capitalize on the participants' field experiences by inviting discussion and debate into the seminars, bringing practical know-how into the academic arena. Twenty-six courses, divided into 4 main modules, are taught over the 22 month period. The main topics covered are organizational and strategic management, project management, supply chain management, emergency and disaster context, and tools for research projects.

Description

The Master of Advanced Studies in Humanitarian Logistics and Management is a part-time executive program for humanitrian professionals. Students attend 6 sessions in Lugano, Switzerland. Each session lasts one week, except the final session which is 12 days and includes thesis defense and graduation. The full program takes 1 year to complete.
