The Master of Veterinary Studies offers peerless flexibility for the animal and veterinary sciences student who knows what they want. The program’s build-your-own-degree structure allows you to tailor-make your course by mixing and matching subjects offered in postgraduate programs both within Veterinary Science and from other faculties.

Maybe you want to sharpen your skill set in a specific area of veterinary studies. Maybe you want to boost your job prospects in a particular field. Or maybe you need specific training for registration as a specialist. With the one-and-a-half-year Master of Veterinary Studies, you will acquire knowledge, applied skills and techniques in a way that best meets your personal career goals in veterinary science.

You will also be part of an internationally recognised leader in veterinary education with world-class clinics in urban and rural environments. In 2015, the Faculty of Veterinary Sciences was ranked the number one veterinary faculty in the Southern Hemisphere.

The Master of Veterinary Studies can be completed on-campus or in combination with distance units taught in interactive online classrooms. Some units of study are offered face to face, in classroom, tutorial, and laboratory format, and some are supervised, practical units of study for which you must arrange supervision prior to enrolment. This is not, however, designed to be a fully distance program.

If you're an international student in Australia on a student visa, please note that you're able to undertake a maximum 12 credit points of online study toward your degree.

Please note that supervised clinical units of study are only available to students employed by the University Teaching Hospital in residency or intern programs. Please check with administrative staff by emailing vetscience.pgcinfo@sydney.edu.au before choosing your program.

Capstone experience

A capstone experience comprises one or more units of study designed by the faculty to provide students with an opportunity to draw together the learning that has taken place during the award, synthesise this with their prior learning and experience, and draw conclusions that will form the basis for further investigation, and intellectual and/or professional growth. For the Master of Veterinary Studies all students complete a 6 to 24 credit point research project as a capstone experience.
