We normally require a second class honours degree 2:2 or above in a numerate discipline, such as mathematics, physics, computer science or other scientific disciplines. We also encourage applications from experienced engineers or graduates from wider engineering disciplines.

Course content
What will you study on the MSc Mechatronic Systems Engineering degree?
This course will focus on both hardware and software issues, bringing these together using a systems approach within the context of mechatronics. You will focus on discrete technologies, integrating technologies into mechatronic systems, and carrying out system performance analysis and optimisation. In preparing the course, Festo, National Instruments and Siemens have all provided significant input to shape the content and make it directly relevant to industry using Industry 4.0 practices.

Developed in partnership with industry for industry, this course is designed to lead to employment, in sector and on graduation. The course benefits from support that spans over 20 years of partnership with industry.
The course is developed in stages, taking a portfolio approach. Throughout the project stages you'll gain an understanding of essential concepts and the ability to work with discrete technologies, before developing your ability to integrate these technologies into mechatronic systems, and carry out system performance analysis and optimisation. In the final stage of the course, you'll apply your knowledge and specialise in your chosen area through your individual project, with the chance to gain industry experience by working with a partner in the UK or abroad.
ModulesMechatronics Systems (Hardware and Software Portfolio) - 60 credits - Compulsory
The main aim of this module is to introduce students to core technologies involved both in hardware and software technologies. These include robotics and automation equipment provided from Festo used in automotive, pharmaceuticals, food and beverage; control systems (PLCs & HMIs) provided by Siemens and software systems such as LabVIEW provided by National Instruments as well as others.
Mechatronics Systems (Systems Integration Portfolio) - 60 credits - CompulsoryThis module will introduce systems necessary to integrate the hardware and software systems along with sensors (or sensor networks) to form Smart Factories, making use of various network protocols (wired and mobile) along with the relevant safety and security systems.
Individual Project - 60 credits - CompulsoryThe Individual Project module is a self-proposed piece of work that enables the individual to specialise in an area that is of interest to them. The project is supervised as one-to-one and allows you to work alone, in a research group or in industry in the UK or abroad.
