About this course

The programme is specifically designed for professionals from a wide variety of backgrounds and organisations, and is particularly suitable for lawyers, HR professionals, company secretaries, owner-managers and those with HR responsibilities.

This LLM gives the student not only an in-depth study of Employment Law but also critical aspects of human resource management. This means that the HR professional gains a comprehensive knowledge of the law which influences HR policies and practices within a business, indeed their own workplace.

The lawyer, on the other hand acquires an understanding of the context within which their advice is being sought, the potential impact such advice may have on a business and where business decisions may have to be made. As such it gives the lawyer a greater understanding of the background in which certain decisions may be made and allows a more holistic approach to be taken.

In the second year, January to December 2022, students take either one 30 credit module or two 15 credit modules and write a 15,000 word dissertation on a topic of their choice on a legal issue within the context of employment law.

Module Choices

Students will all study the Core Module and will then specialise by choosing from the optional modules listed below. Please see the Course Structure section for a full explanation.

Core Module

Employment Law in Context in the UK and EU

Lawyers approach the subject of Employment Law as a legal discipline but their expertise is enhanced if they have an appreciation of the wider context within which Employment Law fits. The modern manager also needs to acquire a knowledge of Employment Law if he or she is to be equipped for modern human resource management. The aim of this module is to provide lawyers and non-lawyers with an underpinning to the optional modules by providing a concise contextual exposition of modern Employment Law.

Optional Modules
  • Civil Liberties in the Workplace
  • Collective Labour Law
  • Aspects of Discrimination in Business
  • Alternative Dispute Resolution
  • Negotiated Study
  • Individual Employment Law
  • Health and Safety Law
  • People Management within Organisations
  • Equal Opportunities in the Workplace
And you can tailor the course to fit your specific job role and industry by selecting modules from other LLM programmes as well. See Flexible Study Options box for further information.

Flexible Study Options

The Employment Law and Practice course forms part of a wider LLM programme at Leicester De Montfort Law School and for added flexibility, in addition to the Employment Law modules available, students may choose to study modules from the other LLM pathways:

  • Food Law
  • Medical Law and Ethics
  • International Human Rights Law
