The mathematician is a student of mathematics, he is engaged in research, experimentation and application of mathematical principles in specialized fields, such as design. A mathematician is a person who carries out studies, researches and experiments concerning mathematical problems. Some scientists from other fields of research can be considered mathematicians if their research offers new mathematical ideas; a notable example is Edward Witten. Conversely, some mathematicians may study mathematical problems related to other fields of scientific and technological research (eg mathematical physics), these people are known as applied mathematicians. One of the first known mathematicians was Thales of Miletus (c. 624 - 546 BC); he was hailed as the first true mathematician and the first known individual to be credited with a mathematical discovery. The first use of deductive reasoning applied to geometry is attributed to him, deriving four corollaries to Thales's Theorem. The work of mathematicians is mainly based on numbers. They can use their skills to conduct scientific research based on mathematical principles, theories and methods that can be applied to different branches of science to solve problems and design solutions. Furthermore, Mathematicians can apply their knowledge to the world of Economics and Finance, as well as for educational purposes in schools and universities. A degree in Mathematics is very versatile and can provide many job opportunities. Mathematicians work in a variety of fields, in particular they deal with Business Management, Accounting, Engineering and Banking professions. They are usually hired by government agencies and educational institutions.
