Standard AS/A level entry requirements of five GCSEs at grade A*-C apply. In addition you will need a minimum grade of B at GCSE Mathematics higher level.
Plus a minimum APS Score: 45

Aim This course will appeal to those who have an interest in using mathematical knowledge and skills to solve problems. As well as being challenging and interesting, it builds on work you will have studied at GCSE Mathematics higher level.

Content During the course you will learn:
· How to solve complicated problems by using mathematical arguments and logic
· How to use mathematics to explore practical problems
· How to use graphic calculators and other resources effectively and appropriately.

The course is divided into 3 units, which cover at AS level:

Year 1 - AS level
Core 1

Extends your knowledge of topics studied at GCSE higher, such as algebra and trigonometry as well as introducing new ideas such as calculus.

Core 2
This unit expands further on skills gained in Core 1 including applications of differentiation and integration, circle theorem, geometric series and much more.

Mechanics 1
You will learn how to describe mathematically the motion of objects and how they respond to forces acting upon them, collisions and 2 dimensional vectors. This unit is particularly useful if you are also studying AS Physics.

Year 2 - A level
Core 3
Core 4

Mechanics 2

These units develop further your mathematical abilities.
Year 2 is extremely useful if you wish to progress to university to study physics, engineering, teaching or just simply love maths.

Progression/career opportunities
The successful completion of this course will allow students to progress on to a range of Higher Education programmes or to enter a career in scientific industries, business, finance or information technology.

For those who are considering continuing their study of mathematics, it may be possible to study Further Maths at A level. Please indicate on your application if this is your intention and discuss your circumstances with our maths lecturer.
