In the Mathematics department here at St Austell we are very committed to each individual student achieving their potential. We believe that it is an enjoyable and rewarding subject and an excellent support to a wide range of careers. Members of the maths team use a variety of teaching strategies to ensure that the experience of students is both enjoyable and successful. We are very committed to offering workshops across the week and this provides a strong support programme designed to provide appropriate extension material or timely support for students. In addition we aim to seek ways to enrich and extend the mathematics we teach including an awareness of the wide range of courses and careers where mathematics plays an important if not crucial role.

Course programme
The number of students obtaining grades A* - B in Mathematics at the college is generally very good and often above the national average. In addition some students go on to tackle the Sixth Term examination papers set by Cambridge University and required or desired by other universities such as Bath and Warwick. St Austell students also take part in the senior UK Maths challenge which is a national competition and attracts a strong entry from the best schools and colleges in the country. Four of our students are also selected each year to take part in the Further Mathematics Team Challenge. This is another national competition which holds local heats before a national final in London.
Most students choose to complete a two year course in A-Level Mathematics although we also offer A-Levels in Further Mathematics and Use of Mathematics, details of which are included below, The two year A-Level course is modular with three modules giving an AS level and a further three giving the full A-Level. The core of both the AS and A2 course is pure mathematics and four of the modules focus on this. Pure Mathematics takes the study of some of the areas of GCSE such as algebra, trigonometry number, graphs and extends them to form a basic knowledge of mathematics from where we can develop the A-Level course to include new topics such as calculus and the Mathematics of growth and change
In addition to the four core modules, two at AS and two at A2 students study an applied module in each year. Currently all students study an option in Decision Mathematics which has its applications in computing and is the study of the way in which problems may be modelled mathematically in order to be solved. A second applied option is chosen from Statistics or Mechanics.
