Overview: The aims of this programme are: to train both UK and overseas graduates in a range of topics in Pure and Applied Mathematics at an advanced level; to equip graduates with the necessary base, including, through an extended independent investigation, research skills that enable one to embark on a research degree in a mathematical subject; to develop the knowledge and skills of graduates to further their prospects for a career as a professional mathematician or mathematics-oriented professional.

Course programme

Course Details

Students must choose 7 modules in Pure and/or Applied Mathematics, including either PMA8001 and PMA8002, or AMA8001 and AMA8002 (but not both), and subject to the students possessing appropriate background knowledge required for particular modules.

Indicative mix for a teaching semester: classes 20%, tutorials 10%, self-study 70%

Assessment & Feedback

Individual modules will be assessed through written examination and/or continuous assessment. The project is assessed by a dissertation (typically 50 pages) and an oral presentation.

Learning and Teaching

Teaching takes place in the morning and afternoon.

There are 12 hours of contact teaching in the 1st and 2nd semesters, and two hours of contact teaching in the summer semester (project).
