This joint honours mathematics and philosophy degree offers an extremely wide choice of philosophy modules with particular teaching strengths in philosophy of mind, science and ancient philosophy, and the Mathematics element gives students a foundation in many branches of mathematics, for example algebra, analysis, probability and geometry.

Year 1

Year 1

Courses are divided into modules. Each year you will normally take modules totalling 120 credits.

Students on the Mathematics & Philosophy with a Year Abroad BSc will spend their third year studying abroad before returning to complete a final year with King’s. This depends on students reaching a certain grade average and being accepted by a partner university. Students on the three year course may transfer to the four year Mathematics & Philosophy with a Year Abroad BSc.

In your first year, you will take 75 credits from Mathematics and 45 credits from Philosophy.

Required Modules

Mathematics:

  • Calculus I (15 credits)

  • Calculus II (15 credits)

  • Linear Methods (15 credits)

  • Numbers and Functions (15 credits)

Philosophy:

In your first year you are required to take one module from each of these three groups which may typically include:

Group A

  • Greek Philosophy I (15 credits)
  • Modern Philosophy I (15 credits)

Group B

  • Ethics I (15 credits)
  • Political Philosophy I (15 credits)

Group C

  • Metaphysics (15 credits)
  • Epistemology I (15 credits)
  • Methodology (15 credits)
Optional Modules

Mathematics

You are also required to take another 15 credits from a range of optional modules.
The modules which you take in first year will be built on in the following years, and some modules in later years require you to have already taken a related module. These optional modules may typcially include:

  • Introduction to Abstract Algebra (15 credits) – this module is required for Linear Algebra in the second year and for Galois Theory in the third year.
  • Introduction to Dynamical Systems (15 credits) – this module required for Intermediate Dynamics in the second year and for Introductory Quantum Theory in the third year.

Students take four Mathematics and four Philosophy modules.

Mathematics:

If you have not already taken Introduction to Abstract Algebra in first year, you will be required to take the following module in your second year:

  • Introduction to Abstract Algebra (15 credits)

In addition, you are required to take at least one of the following modules:

Philosophy:

You are required to take three modules from at least two of the following groups, each of which may typically include:
