About the subject
The course requires Higher level GCSE as a starting point
The central spine is the Core modules, which take the algebra and trigonometry studied at higher level GCSE on further and begin the study of a new topic - calculus. Algebra is particularly important and you should, by the end of the course, become as fluent with algebra as you would expect to be with arithmetic at the end of GCSE.
The Mechanics modules cover analysing forces, accelerations, momentum and similar ideas to describe what happens in physical situations.
The Statistics modules take on the work done at GCSE to cover ways of analysing and displaying numerical data, and of drawing conclusions from this. Probability theory becomes a key tool.
Students will need to move on from performing calculations accurately towards having a clear understanding of what they are doing and being able to interpret the significance of the numerical answers.
There is no coursework at AS/A level

Learning Styles
Lessons will combine explanation of the concepts and techniques covered with a chance for students to work individually and cooperatively to consolidate their understanding. Computers and graphical calculators will be used to enhance this process. Students need to take an active part in their learning, in monitoring their depth of understanding and in initiating steps to repair weaknesses. Students also need Communication skills to get the most out of the course.

Subject combinations and progression
The Mechanics option goes well with AS/A2 Physics, Design Technology etc. and would lead towards eventual careers in Engineering, Design, Physical Science etc. The Statistics option combines well with a lot of other courses with Statistics content - e.g. Psychology, Sociology, Geography, Biology, and leads toward any eventual career that includes the need to collate, summarise and interpret figures. Both are adequate preparations for study in the Maths area, but better is Further Maths, which covers both options and also takes the central core on further.
