MEng and BEng students take the same modules until Year 3 when the routes diverge. The MEng contains an extra year of advanced-level study.

Year 1 provides a solid knowledge of the general technical and non-technical subjects that underpin mechanical engineering practices.

Year 2 introduces more focused studies, covering specialist subjects such as applied mechanics, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, electronics, control and computing. You will have the opportunity to extend your mathematics and project-management abilities.

Year 3 comprises core engineering topics and advanced mechanical engineering modules, plus a strong focus on independent and group project work. You will gain an understanding of the business world. MEng students will continue to deepen their knowledge in areas such as computer-aided design and mathematics.

Year 4 of the MEng course will continue to deepen and broaden expertise. A strong emphasis is again on independent learning, as well as an industrially focused group project.

About this course

Mechanical engineering is the broadest engineering discipline at Kingston University.
It covers the design and manufacture of a wide range of mechanical products and systems, giving you the flexibility to specialise later.
Our fully-equipped labs help you put theory into practice. They include:
computer-aided design tools; and
robotics, manufacturing and testing equipment.
You will gain important simulation skills, making you highly employable. Simulation skills are highly sought after in industry because they allow companies to reduce the time it takes to get a product on the market.
We have good links with industry, which means many students gain work placements during the third year. This provides valuable industrial experience.

You will have the opportunity to study a foreign language, free of charge, during your time at the University on a not-for-credit basis as part of the Kingston Language Scheme. Options currently include: Arabic, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish.

A-level: Mathematics or suitable science subject required (physics or chemistry). General Studies not accepted.
BTEC Extended Diploma or National Diploma: Engineering or related subject.
GCSE: Candidates are normally required to hold five GCSE subjects grades A*–C (or comparable numeric score under the newly reformed GCSE gradings): five subjects including Mathematics, one suitable science subject and English Language, or equivalent.

Accreditation is a mark of assurance that the degree meets the standards set by the Engineering Council in the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC). Some employers recruit preferentially from accredited degrees, and an accredited degree is likely to be recognised by other countries that are signatories to international accords.
