Taught by knowledgeable, experienced staff, this course has a unique balance of key analytical subjects and professional skills, ensuring that you graduate with the confidence to face challenging engineering situations in industry. The management skills necessary to operate successfully in modern industry are promoted and developed at all stages of the course. A variety of techniques are used throughout the course with an emphasis on lectures, supporting tutorials and laboratory classes.

You will be exposed to industry-standard 3D design and FEA Analysis software and have access to computer and experimental laboratory facilities throughout the course.

The individual project in year three will consolidate your theoretical and practical knowledge gained in the first two years. You will learn to implement project management, research and analysis techniques to complete an individual dissertation culminating your three years of study at BEng Level.

Contact hours

You will be taught through a combination of lectures, tutorials, seminars, group work and self-directed study. Assessment is through coursework (presentations, essays and reports) and usually an exam or test. Your precise timetable will depend on the optional modules you choose to take, however, you will normally attend around 15 hours of timetabled taught sessions (lectures and tutorials) each week, and we expect you to undertake at least 15 further hours of independent study to complete project work and research.

Engineering students have taken part in work experience placements at a number of local, national and international companies including BMW AG, Airbus UK and Siemens.

You can improve your CV, become highly employable and put the skills you learn on your course into practice by taking a work placement as part of your studies.

Technology's dedicated Placement Unit| provides support to all of our students looking to integrate a placement within their university career on both undergraduate degrees and postgraduate masters programmes. The placement unit will help you search for placement opportunities, create and refine your CV and interview approach, and offer any advice you need to find a great placement. Our placement students have worked for a range of organisations from small business through to multinational companies across the world including Microsoft, IBM, GlaxoSmithKline and PepsiCo International.

Placements can enhance your career prospects and give you the chance to use theory from the classroom in a real-world scenario before you have graduated.

Students from this course have taken part in work experience placements at a number of national and international companies over the past three years including Airbus UK and Cummins Generator Technologies Ltd.

While studying you also have the opportunity to apply your knowledge of engineering and project management to propose a design solution for a real problem in a developing country based on the Engineering without Borders (EwB) Challenge. This can help you to become more socially and environmentally aware, teach you to manage stakeholders’ expectations throughout the project and to integrate Sustainable Development in the design process. This will be of benefit because employers are increasingly looking for “well rounded” engineers who understand sustainability and are keen to take on complex global challenges, with practical experience helping you stand out from the crowd.
