Mechanical Engineering Degree Requirements

The following requirements are in addition to, or further elaborate upon, those requirements outlined in The Graduate School Policy Guide.

Master's

Courses Units

Unless doing MS with a Specialization, at least one course each from four of the eight subareas:

Solids, Fluids/Thermodynamics/Energy, Dynamics/Controls, Design/Manufacturing/Tribology, MEMS/Nanotechnology, Biomedical/Biology, Mathematics/Sciences, Engineering Management 4 MS with Thesis: MECH ENG 590 Research 3 MECH ENG 512 Seminar (must be taken in all quarters of full-time registration) 0 A minimum number of 400-level courses 5 Departmental courses (MECH ENG or as listed in the most recent ME Graduate Handbook) 5 MS Non-Thesis: MECH ENG 499 Project (independent research) 1 A minimum number of 400-level courses 5 Departmental courses (MECH ENG or as listed in the most recent ME Graduate Handbook) 7 Total required units: (At least five courses excluding 499/512/590 must be 400-level) 12

• Examinations: addresses research project
• Research/Projects: research report on topic of interest to both student and advisor

PhD

Courses Units Courses equivalent to MS degree in Mechanical Engineering (not including MECH ENG 499 Project for MS) 6 MECH ENG 512 Seminar (required in all quarters of full-time registration) 0 MECH ENG 513 Professional Essentials (required one quarter) 0 Courses beyond MS (advisor-approved; at least one half (1/2) must be 400-level or above.) 9 Total required units:(Minimum of 15 units after the BS All coursework must be for a grade, excluding projects and thesis. Nine (9) course units must satisfy the MS course requirements (breadth requirement and minimum number of ME core courses) 15

Other PhD Degree Requirements

• Examinations: research qualification exam and dissertation proposal exam prior to admission to candidacy
• Research/Projects: research of publishable quality, in close cooperation with faculty advisor, as basis for PhD dissertation
• PhD Dissertation: based on research projects
• Final Evaluations: oral presentation of dissertation to candidate's advisory committee
