Why Media and Journalism?
Our BA(Hons) Media and Journalism will develop your writing and production skills across print, screen and digital platforms, making you employable in a wide range of communications industries.
In addition to learning the hands-on craft of traditional reporting, you will produce compelling, well-researched stories using blogs, content marketing and social media, developing creative ways of engaging diverse audiences. The course will also give you an in-depth understanding of the political, economic and media contexts in which today's media are produced and consumed, locally, nationally and internationally.
In a fast-moving media landscape, where traditional communications have had to change and adapt, you have the potential to turn your skills into a rewarding, well-paid career.

About this course

Placements
You will engage with the vibrant urban and media culture of Bristol in all three years. We encourage and support work placements, internships and volunteering opportunities throughout the course. Our strong industry contacts include the BBC, the National Union of Journalists, the Bristol Post, Pervasive Media Studio and numerous regional media companies. There is the option of a more formal placement in year three.
Fieldwork
Fieldwork includes visits to the Westminster parliament and assignments in and around Bristol throughout the three years.

Course programme

Content

This course involves the development of creative digital media projects and an understanding of the professional and cultural contexts for these activities.

Year one

You are introduced to key theories, histories and techniques in media practice, particularly photography, video, web media and print journalism. In journalism, you will be writing features, news stories, reviews and editorials, as well as developing skills in digital media production. You will debate the changing role of media and journalism within society and its relationship to consumer culture, democracy and everyday life in a globalised world.

Year two

You will be writing features, news stories, reviews and editorials, as well as developing skills in digital media production. You will discover the place of journalism within society and its relationship to democracy and learn about the history and structure of media.

You will be developing your journalism as well as digital media skills and advance your critical understanding of and ability to question the role of journalistic media and public communications in society. The year is designed so you can pursue more independent projects in Year three.

Final year

You will develop specialist knowledge in the study of contemporary journalism, ethics, media and culture, honing expertise in writing, media production and research as a stepping stone to employment or further advanced study. You can do a substantial independent project drawing on your digital media and journalism and academic research skills developed in years 1 and 2. You can also choose to undertake a work placement as part of your studies.

Please also note this structure is for the full-time course delivery only. For part-time delivery, the same modules will be studied. However, the structure will differ.
