This course presents the main concepts of decision analysis, artificial intelligence, and predictive model construction and evaluation in the specific context of medical applications. The advantages and disadvantages of using these methods in real-world systems are emphasized, while students gain hands-on experience with application specific methods. The technical focus of the course includes decision analysis, knowledge-based systems (qualitative and quantitative), learning systems (including logistic regression, classification trees, neural networks), and techniques to evaluate the performance of such systems.

Course programme
Lectures: 2 sessions / week, 1.5 hours / session
This is primarily a lecture based course with homework assignments, a midterm, and final project. There is no final exam. This course is required for students in the master's program in Medical Informatics and is open to other graduate students and advanced undergraduates.
The prerequisites include Artificial Intelligence (6.034) or Medical Artificial Intelligence (HST.947), programming skills, or permission of the instructor.
Assignments include 3 homeworks with a programming component and a final project report (5 pages plus references, figures, tables on the web) and oral presentation.
