If you study medical microbiology at Surrey, we’ll teach you about the biological and pathogenic qualities of microbes. This includes microbes which are good for our health in addition to the study of microorganisms which create diseases. Immunology, or the study of our reactions to diseases, is another area of focus in our course. You will also study the detection, management and treatment of infectious diseases.
We’re confident our course will develop you into a capable scientist and open new doors for you. To give one example, you’ll have an exciting chance to join a research group for your longer project which will be supported with modules in research methods, critical writing and journal clubs.

About this course
Medical microbiology is essential – helping us to prevent, diagnose and treat infectious diseases.
As the growth of antibiotic resistant microbes and the rise and fall of infectious diseases continues to be documented, you’ll be studying both a vital subject and an innovative course at a very important time.
Our course offers the chance for you to do extensive research while also studying taught modules. It’s also an excellent route to further study, or work within research in either the public or private sector. You’ll also be able to work with internationally recognised research groups and be taught by leading experts.
A minimum of a 2:2 in a relevant UK honours degree, or a recognised equivalent international qualification. We'll also ask you to attend an interview.
Applications from candidates not possessing the qualifications mentioned above may be considered, depending on the length and quality of their experience, published works and recommendations from employers. Such candidates may be required to complete a qualifying assessment.
