Medication Awareness
Assisting with or administering Medication can be a source of great anxiety to care staff. Often they are unsure of their responsibilities in this regard and worry that they may get it wrong. Personal Care Consultants has developed a one day training course which increases staff confidence in the administration of medication by developing their knowledge of the subject and reinforcing their remit and responsibilities in relation to medication.
The first half of this one day training course focuses on Medication Awareness and has the following learning objectives:
- To discuss the definition of the term ‘medicines’
- Explore Medicines Act 1968 - The first comprehensive legislation on medicines in the UK providing a statutory legal framework for the:

- Administration of medicines
- Categories & types of medicines including capsules, tablets, lozenges, liquids and sprays
- Consider the benefits, contra indications, correct administration methods associated with various forms of medication
- Improve your knowledge of forms of medicines and consider their benefits
- Identify the roles and responsibilities of those involved in medication
The afternoon is a bespoke session taking staff through the Commissioning organisation’s Medication policy. This session is designed to underline the roles and responsibilities the organisation places on their staff in relation to medication.
This session promotes understanding of the policy and also encourages consistency of approach by familiarising all staff with the processes and guidance laid out in their policy. For illustrative purposes the session may include:
- Level of Support required when prompting and /or administering medication
- Consent, control, refusal and covert administration of medication
- Overview of the procedures to be followed when giving medication
- Packaging, containers and handling of medication
