The Department of Medicine offers the degrees of MSc and PhD. The Department offers a specialization in Translational Medicine (MSc only) as well as a general program in Medicine, either as part of a coordinated program of training leading to the fulfillment of requirements for postgraduate training in the medical specialties, or as a separate program for those proceeding from a BSc or equivalent degree.

Course programme
Research may be carried out in the basic sciences, epidemiology, public health sciences, or clinical sciences and may be either theoretical or applied in nature.
The Department of Medicine maintains a compilation of applicable guidelines and regulations available on the Department website.
For Doctoral programs, The Department's minimum admission requirements are a research-based master's degree with an admission GPA of at least 3.0 on the 4-point scale from the University of Alberta, or an equivalent qualification and standing from a recognized institution. The admission GPA will be calculated on the last ★60 of graded coursework completed, or on the equivalent of the last two years of full-time graded coursework.
The Research Training Committee will determine if a student has sufficient research experience to be admitted directly to the PhD program.
