Course programme

The prestigious 5-year MEng in Software Engineering degree emphasises professional engineering of large, high-quality software systems. Emphasis on professionalism contributes to the esteem in which Aberystwyth Software Engineering graduates are held.

If you choose to take the MEng Software Engineering degree then you will have to take a year in employment as a compulsory part of your degree. This year is crucial for gaining practical experience in the skills learnt during your first two years of study.

Following your industrial placement, MEng Software Engineering degree students carry out a further two years of study. During this time, you'll undertake team and individual projects as well as studying modules at Master's level. Open-ended challenges are normal at this level, and success demands an independent-minded strictly professional and well-organised approach to study.

The MEng Software Engineering degree will give you a firm foundation in the following computing skills:

  • Programming (various languages appropriate to the subject) with emphasis on high quality design and development
  • Large scale software development
  • Professional issues in software engineering
  • Telecommunications
  • Database management systems
  • C and Unix systems programming
  • Distributed systems technologies
  • Safety critical systems
  • Computer Forensics

As well as these, you will also develop specialised skills chosen from the various disciplines on offer within the Computer Science Department. Some of these include graphics and visualisation, artificial intelligence, robotics, telematics and mobile computing.

Final Year Projects

Most of our MEng Software Engineering degree students link project work directly to commercial needs and frequently address problems encountered during the year in employment. The final year projects will take up half of your time in your final year.

A few recent projects include:

  • Three dimensional terrain modelling on connected limited multimedia devices
  • The control system for an autonomous sailing robot
  • Autonomous music genre classifier
