About this course

Mental Health - OCNW Level 2

Introduction:
By the end of this course you will have acquired an understanding of the main issues around the topic of mental health, and examined relevant policies and services. This is an Open College of the North West (OCNW) Level 2 (Intermediate) course.

Study Mode & Location:
This 16 week part-time evening course will last for 3 hours per week. It will be held at Preston College, Fulwood Campus, St Vincent`s Road, Preston, PR2 8UR.

Course Content:
You will study many issues around the topic of mental health and examine policies and services such as:

  • Defining Mental Health.
  • Models of Mental Health.
  • Inequality & Mental Health.
  • Legislation & Polices.
  • Treatment of Mental Disorders.
  • Service User Movements.


You will be taught by a variety of methods, including group work, discussions, case studies and videos. You may well have more than one tutor in that we try wherever possible to use experts from the field of mental health work.

Assessment:
You will be assessed on this course via the production of two assignments. The first is a piece of coursework in the form of an essay or research report on a chosen theory or topic. This will be produced during the course with help from your tutors. It will be approximately 1800-2000 words long. The second assessment is a controlled assignment under exam conditions. It will be in the form of an essay or questions about topics covered on the course. You will have the chance to study the controlled assignment materials at least 3 weeks before the exam and then will produce your own work on the day.

Careers & Progression Opportunities:
Successful completion of this Level 2 course will enhance your Curriculum Vitae and therefore increase your job prospects. It may also lead to other Level 2 courses in related subjects, or (if you are ready and have achieved Grades 4/5) you may progress to Level 3 courses. Level 3 units combined with Level 2 units can be used to progress to degrees and diplomas in Social Work and Nursing.

You will need to have an informal interview with a Adult Admissions Adviser.
Many courses have limited places so please enquire as soon as possible. Following interview, the earliest you may enrol is mid-June.
