Gain significant recognition in your field whilst continuing to work in your own team, with our course for health and social care staff aiming to become Approved Mental Health Professionals (AMHPs).
Our course combines practice and theory to offer you the most effective learning experience. With the support from your employer, you will be placed in your local AMHP duty team. You will study in university over two semesters from September 2016 to May 2017 and you will also be able to work two to three days per week in your own team.
You will learn from a variety of professionals, ranging from expert practitioners and service users to law professional trainers and psychiatric staff. You will also be encouraged to visit services, such as Older People wards or Child and Adolescent Mental Health, to gain further experience in clinical practice.
Before starting the course a meeting will be arranged between you and your sponsoring manager and we will put together a learning programme that best suits you and your team. You will be expected to attend a five day pre-AMHP course in July.

About this course
Once you successfully complete this course, you will have met the Health Care Professions Council's (HCPC) requirements for the role and will be eligible to apply for AMHP registration through your Local Authority / Mental Health Trust. You will enhance your employment opportunities with sought-after skills which meet the regulations of the Mental Health Act 1983.
Practice placements are a significant part of the course, spread across seven months. You will be supported by a Practice Educator who will manage and oversee your practice experience. You will also shadow practitioners and lead mental health assessments. Placements are arranged through your sponsoring manager, via your own local authority and/or Mental Health Trusts and in conjunction with our university.

- Mental Health LawThis module provides students with the opportunity to develop competence in the legal aspects of undertaking statutory responsibilities under the Mental Health Act 1983, and to be approved in accordance with Mental Health Legislation. The module aims to give students a thorough knowledge of, and ability to apply, mental health policy and legislation related to people with mental health needs and their carers with a specific focus on assessments under the Mental Health Act 1983.
- Statutory Mental Health PracticeThis module provides students with the opportunity to develop and demonstrate competence in carrying out statutory responsibilities under the Mental Health Act 1983 (as amended by the Mental Health Act 2007).The module aims to give students a thorough knowledge and application of mental health policy and legislation related to people with mental health needs and their carers with a specific focus on assessments under the Mental Health Act 1983.
We'll assess the skills and knowledge you'll develop in a variety of ways. For example, a written assignment examining themes in mental health legislation or a multiple choice questionnaire exploring law. As part of your placement we'll provide you with a practice document outlining key competencies, which you'll evidence with a portfolio. Your Practice Educator will also produce a report on how you've applied what you've learnt.
