Metal engravers engrave designs and inscriptions on all types of metals, work that involves various skill levels. Highly skilled hand engravers use hand carving tools (burins). Many engravers use machines, often computerized. Engravers engrave designs and / or inscriptions on various metals, including aluminum, stainless steel, brass, copper, bronze and precious metals such as gold and silver. They decorate objects and also engrave writings or letters on plates, cups, jewels and clock faces, trophies etc. In industry they produce marks and plates to be applied to machinery, engrave control panels, dials and graduated scales on tools. They engrave flat or curved surfaces, or use special techniques to write or draw in relief. They respect the client's requests such as reproducing the model of a design on an object, while the highly specialized ones, who work on ornamental objects, can create their own original designs. There are various techniques and methods of engraving and varying degrees of skill, ranging from operating an engraving machine to the highest level of craftsmanship. Manual engraving requires great skill, a manual carver is used and the object to be engraved is placed in a vise that holds it steady while you work. Some engravers work freehand, while others draw on the object what they need to engrave, before starting to work. It is important to have attention to detail along with the ability to concentrate for long periods.
