The BS in Middle Grades Education program consists of extensive field-based learning and integrated, cross-disciplinary course work. The curriculum and the field experiences prepare teacher candidates to address the human relations and diversity within the public schools. The Middle Grades Education program is organized in cohorts led by mentor leaders. A cohort is a group of students who begins and ends a program at the same time. The teacher candidates take courses together providing program offerings that enhance the opportunities for developing collaboration that will eventually help the students as they work in schools and in the community.

For admission into the Middle Grades Education program, professional courses are primarily taken in the third and fourth years. After being officially accepted to Georgia College, students must apply on or before the third Friday in January to be considered for acceptance into a College of Education teacher education program beginning the next fall. Cohort application packets are available online in October, and acceptance is competitive.

About this course

The Middle Grades Education program is designed to prepare prospective teachers of young adolescents in grades 4-8. In addition to field placements in elementary and middle grades classrooms throughout the two years in the program, teacher candidates will take courses to support two areas of concentration: English/language arts and a choice of either mathematics, science, or social science.

A freshman 1-hour orientation course is required by GC.
In order to receive credit towards graduation, candidates must earn a B or higher in EDEX 3220.
