The Air Force (abbreviated to AM), in the international context Italian Air Force (abbreviated to ITAF) is, together with the Italian Army, Navy and Arma dei Carabinieri, one of the four Italian armed forces and is, in particular, the one delegated to defense of national airspace. The first pilot's license was issued in September 1909 to lieutenant Mario Calderara. Calderara himself, together with Lt. Umberto Savoia, signed in February 1910 the first contract with the Wright brothers for the production under license, in Italy, of 5 aircraft using the patents held by the Wrights themselves. The importance of the aeronautics grew more and more even after the end of the conflict, until the decision to separate the weapon from the Royal Army, elevating it to an autonomous armed force as Regia Aeronautica, with the issue of the royal decree n. 645. The activity in the Italian resistance begins on the morning of 9 September when two Macchi MC205 patrols escort some units of our war fleet sailing from La Spezia to the ports controlled by the Allies. On the 11th, during the transfer flight of a bombing unit from Perugia airport to Sardinia, the German fighter attacks our formation giving rise to the first air combat between the two former allies. On the 12th, while fighter planes machine-gun German columns in retreat in the Salento peninsula, for the first time the tricolor cockades appear in the skies of some Italian cities still occupied, on which our aircraft drop leaflets, thus establishing a concrete spiritual bond between Italians united by the same aspirations for freedom. The organizational structure of the Air Force [17] has undergone, in recent years, profound changes in terms of reorganization to adapt the aircraft to the new needs of the international scenario, and also to "adapt" to the "new professional model" of the armed forces.
